Doc White wakes up in a Las Vegas hotel suite a very confused man with a massive tequila hangover. As he reflects on the previous day’s events that included his wife walking out on him and with their joint savings, the return of the voice in his head, his subsequent loss of another $150,000 at the blackjack tables, and then waking up next to a total stranger, Doc’s already damaged life has taken another serious dip downward.
In order to pay off his new debt, Doc is forced to do something he vowed years ago never to do again; take a corporate job. Doc’s new boss, an octogenarian Chinese casino owner with a taste for curling and political intrigue, along with the return of an old love help to reenergize Doc as he tries to rebuild his life in Sin City. At a major crossroads, Doc draws on the expertise of Merlin, his coke-addled, phobic colleague from a prior life and Summerman, a part-time ghost who is certain he can help Doc deal with the voice in his head.
By the time this initial installment in B.R. Snow’s Damaged Posse series is wrapped up, Doc, Merlin, and Summerman have joined forces and are armed and ready to wreak havoc on the bad guys as well as themselves.

Worse is to come. He finds out he owes 150 large to the casino owner who runs the hotel. He has no way of paying off his debt as his new wife has run off to the Med with all his money.
But Doc has special talents, least of which is he knows computers, and it just so happens the casino owner, an 84 year old Chinese - Hedaya needs help with his system.
Now the fun starts for Doc as he has to fall back on his old CIA ways to figure out how not to end up under a fresh patch of newly-dug sand in the desert.

An intriguing mix of high rolling casino action, high finance, FBI vs. CIA and a little romance makes this a story to serve the interest of many readers. Ex CIA agents, a wealthy Chinese casino owner, bungling FBI agents and a computer wizard named Merlin make for an enjoyable few hours of reading. Add a couple of sultry ladies and the mix produces high level entertainment.
The book was fast paced, beautifully written, and well thought out. Loved the sense of humor used and the way there were explanations for unique happening. Can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Story started out very good but all these technology mysteries. Leave me behind. I prefer lighter reading than this book.
Doc goes to Vegas for a gambling binge and gets hired to straighten out the implementation of a new computer system. There are many interesting characters, lots of action, and lots of surprises. Many will enjoy even if they have not been at an organization implementing a new computer system, but people have the experience will particularly enjoy it. There is some bumbling government involvement.
There is very, very little violence and the sex is not explicit. Mature teenagers should be OK with it.
I am nearing the end of American Midnight and I realized that I was purposely slowing my pace to complete this book. I just don't want it to end. I love Doc and Merlin and I am not sure what Summerman will do next, but I am sure it will be compelling. I love all of the Damage Posse books. Keep writing B R Snow. Thanks for all of the charecters and all of their facets and colors and humor. I want to meet them at the movies too.
I thorougly enjoyed reading this book. What a cast of quirky characters! Doc, Merlin, and Summerman became real people with all their unique personalities. Author Snow did a great job of creating a story filled with suspense and unexpected twists and turns. Look forward to reading more in the Damaged Posse Series.
Technology is unpredictably helpful or dangerous. It can be a sieve, whose holes can be manipulated by any skillful programmer or so mushy the holes are unknowable and an unworkable labyrinth. This author used the frailties of both tech scene and characters to good advantage. Good read.
